The venture of Gloria Cuaresma in the hospitality industry happened naturally.
An idle property that she owned and wanted to be productive was a simple prompt that led to the creation of Casa Katreena, a downtown dormitel offers nothing but good rooms for travelers on the go.
The dormitel operations of Casa Katreena is based on the idea of no-fuss accommodation, Cuaresma said.
Cuaresma, who is witnessing an increase in the visitor traffic in Davao City (as based on the growing clamor for durian coffee in her other coffee chain business Blugre), wanted to reach out to a market segment that is poised to remain constant in the coming years.
Davao City, she said, being home of the country’s President is, more than ever, becoming a top destination of foreign and local tourists, As forecasts of the Department of Tourism in the region point to increasing tourists, Cuaresma directs her business efforts to cater to backpackers in the city.
“They are the kind of tourists who want accommodation plain and simple” – Cuaresma

Casa Katreena’s spaces are simple but on point. Youthful colors make every room’s white interiors pop and come to life. Vintage posters and decor add oomph to every room’s corner without being too tacky.
The best part about this dormitel is its location. It’s humble space in Ponciano Reyes Street makes visits to Davao destinations easy to map out.
When they stay in Casa Katreena, tourists do not need to plan extensively for itineraries for their leisurely visit to Davao City.
The dormitel is only blocks away from restaurants, bars, banks, hospitals, and local attractions like the City Hall, the Davao Cinematheque, and People’s Park.
Casa Katreena is also a walking distance from the city’s point of convergence in Roxas Avenue for convenient rides to the north for Samal Island jump off points, or to eco-adventure destinations like Eden Nature Park and Malagos in the south.
On top of this convenience in location, Cuaresma complements simple accommodation with rock bottom prices. Each bed space rate start at 250 per person.
The dormitel can accommodate 55 persons in its shared rooms. Suites for two are also available but in limited number.
Casa Katreena also offers a function room for 40 to 60 people, making it convenient for low cost conferences to be organized in the dormitel.
Cuaresma was hands on in planning and designing the dormitel. She wanted to focus on efficient spaces that are comfortable. She believes that accommodations are at their best when these sit humbly in the background, ensuring that guests are able to focus on the idea of travel than indulging indoors when on a trip.
“Backpackers, my target market, just need a place to sleep. They do away with extravagant rooms.” – Cuaresma
“I wanted to keep things simple,” she said. “Backpackers, my target market, just need a place to sleep. They do away with extravagant rooms.”
Cuaresma said that when there’s zero clutter, there’s maximum comfort. This results to a dormitel experience that is anchored on nothing but good vibes.
